They Tried to Scam an 86-year-old and Failed

I guess they thought he would be an easy mark. Clark County shooting: Deputies say 86-year-old was being scammed before he killed woman at his house

Lt. Kristopher Shultz said preliminary investigation revealed the resident had been contacted by telephone by strangers. They told the 86-year-old a relative of his was incarcerated in the Clark County Jail and “a significant amount of money, in cash, was necessary to post bail for this relative,” Shultz said.

The caller provided pertinent information for the case and the posting of bail, “all of which was bogus information,” the lieutenant said.

Clark County, Ohio is just northeast of Dayton, Ohio. The coroner of Montgomery County (that includes Dayton) did the forensic examination for this case.

A woman associated with the scammers went to the home of the 86-year-old to get the cash. Things didn't go well for Loletha Hall.

She apparently was armed with a knife, because the 86-year-old had lacerations to the head and ear.

When Hall went to the man’s house, the resident produced a pistol and shot Hall multiple times.

I thought about titling this post, "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight," but that didn't seem like the most important aspect of this incident.

The incident prompted a message from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office to remind residents, especially older citizens, that no law enforcement agency or court will make contact with anyone to solicit cash for bail or other official functions.

With luck, phone records and associates of of Hall will lead to the other people involved in the scam.
