NYPD Special Victims Unit Not So Special

They just couldn't be bothered about forensic evidence. From the NY Post we get the following. DOJ probing NYPD special victims unit over NYC rape kits abandoned in storage: sources

Rape kits that should have been analyzed by the NYPD but were left in storage at hospitals across the city are now part of a sprawling Department of Justice probe into the department’s Special Victims Division, The Post has learned.

This isn't a couple of evidence kits. This is wholesale, "Let's ignore the evidence" activity. Actually the NYPD won't say how many instances are involved. It could be because they don't know - couldn't be bothered to find out. And if could be because the DO know, and are afraid to let the public know how big the problem is. The only thing we know is that it is a "large number of evidence kits.

The abandoned evidence could have helped catch serial rapists with modern-day technology like DNA cloning, which is used in cases where there wasn’t enough evidence to find a match at the time of the crime.

One source says that they don't know the extent of the problem. If so that is another problem, because The NY Post first reported on this issue December 3rd. You can't find out how many evidence kits are in storage in a month? Maybe you just don't care.
