The Cassette Tape - 1 September 1963

From Eric Alper:

[Yesterday] in 1963 - 50 years ago - Philips first introduced the Cassette at the Berlin Radio Show.
So, happy birthday, we couldn't have made mixed tapes without you.

The cassette quickly replaced the 8-track in cars, which meant we had music on long trips.

Then Sony unveiled the Walkman, which meant we could take our music anywhere, which lead to where we are today.

Though no one has the patience to sit down and listen to both sides of an LP anymore. And I think Millennials' and Zoomers' heads would explode if you tried to get them to listen to an entire double album in one sitting, like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from Genesis or Quadrophenia from The Who. I doubt they even know that most concept albums are meant to be listened to in a specific order. (Everything is on shuffle mode.)

Anyway, it is certainly a date worth noting.

  1. Some double albums have to be listened to end to end because they tell a story such as The Who's Tommy or Quadraphina or Pink Floyd's The Wall. Others just because the music is good like Eric Clapton's Just One Night.
