Fourth of July Weekend in Chicago

July 4th is a special time in Chicago, or as HeyJackass! likes to say, it is the Shitshow of the Year

8-10 years ago, this weekend along with the week at large was a lock for the most violent of the year. However, since the wheels came off in late May of 2020, it has become another lead-filled, mostly peaceful, often violent, occasionally unacceptable, and absolutely, 100% demonization-free weekend filled with silly decisions and poor life choices only with an extra day or two thrown in to pad the stats.

Brandon Johnson, the man currently unlucky enough to be mayor of the Windy City, says you are not to demonize youth running amok in Chicago. Of course he also says that if you don't live in Chicago you are allowed to comment on the crime in that once-great city. And I will certainly ignore that 2nd dictate.

Final Demonized Tally: 13 killed, 63 wounded

While those numbers may sound awful - they are - it isn't too far off from average 4th of July Weekend in Chicago.

As HeyJackass! tracks weekends, holidays like July 4th have a variable number of days, which does make year to year comparisons problematic. This year the holiday weekend is tracked from noon on Friday, through 6 AM Wednesday July 4th. Celebrations and mayhem start early, and run late. Click thru for the details.
