Do You Think Your Data is Safe in the Cloud?

Of course it is. Yeah, in the same way that your cable internet service never goes out. Daily News Stuff 10 July 2023:Rethinkering Edition

If you were using InfluxDB Cloud in Western Europe or Australia last week you probably had a bad time. (InfluxData)

Because that went away. You did read the email, right? Where we said we would delete all your data without further warning?

No?

Oh dear.

It seems a bunch of people were not notified, or claiming they were not notified, anyway. And the data is gone. Woosh. Hacker News started off saying that it was likely because of some data law going into effect in Belgium, but the real issue is that they weren't making enough money on that installation, so they decided that they really don't give sh*t about what this does to your business.

Welcome to the wonderful world of outsourcing, where no one gives a damn about your stuff, as much as you do.

Hey we warned you, and even if we didn't warn you it is in the service agreement. (You know, that stuff you never read before clicking "OK" when signing up on a website.)

So how much were you spending to have these people "manage" your data? Did you have any savings over that time in personnel or whatever? And what costs are you looking at now?

They should have done a scream test.

If you are planning to shut down a service, after giving everyone appropriate warning and making sure all stakeholders have signed off, turn it off or otherwise disable it while keeping the data intact.

If no-one screams, you're safe to delete it.

Customers of this "data management company" are either at Square One or Ground Zero. The two places that may look very much alike today.
