February In Chicago

Chicago City Flag

From HeyJackass! - February Wrap-up

An average number of shootings and homicides for the month wasn’t enough for a “crime is down” declaration to be used or believed ahead of the election.

He is speaking of course of Mayor Lightfoot losing her re-election bid. That marks the second time in my lifetime that an incumbent mayor who was actively seeking re-election was defeated. The last time was in 1979. (And I still don't think Lightfoot looks like Beatlejuice.)

Final totals for the month were 43 killed, and 119 shot and wounded.

That doesn't look too bad when you only compare to the last 2 years. But history goes back farther than that.

February 2015: 20 killed, 59 wounded
February 2014: 22 killed, 54 wounded
