The Lowest Rated TV Show of All Time?

Not quite. But Mindy Kaling did something that I thought was impossible: she united the Left and the Right in hating this show.

The London Telegraph was the first thing I tripped over. Velma: how Mindy Kaling's Scooby-Doo update became the most hated show on TV

In an age when nobody can agree about anything, Left and Right have united in their loathing of Mindy Kaling's Scooby-Doo update. Why?

From The Atlantic we get The Line That Velma Crossed

Meddling kids getting into wacky mysteries with their dog, this show is adamantly not. And in the months leading up to Velma’s debut, the creative team seemed to anticipate backlash to the bold changes they’d made. The creator, Charlie Grandy, argued that the writers’ alterations—including excising Scooby from the gang, reimagining Velma as a misanthropic South Asian teenager, and incorporating grotesque gags—felt authentic to the spirit of the original series.

As Yellow Flash noted, The Atlantic should love this show, what with all of the Representaaaation™.

Then we have HuffPo, which originally - and sometimes even still - was trying to defend Velma from the backlash. They have occasionally let the veil fall. 6 Tweets That Perfectly Explain Why South Asian Twitter Is Not Feeling 'Velma'

It’s 2023. The self-loathing brown girl trope is just not it.

I mentioned Yellow Flash. He has a video on the show. Velma has officially jumped the shark! EVERYONE is turning on HBO Max and Mindy Kaling now!. It seems as if most YouTubers do, if they have any connection to TV/Movies.

Others that have videos include:

It was even part of the discussion on Friday Night Tights. (They started by playing the intro to last week's show, so they went to Chrissie Mayr's Frosk-bitten Rap, followed by the correct intro. Which is OK because the theme song rocks!)

AZ said episode 4 was perhaps the worst episode of television he has ever seen. (I will have to watch his review of the early episodes...)

There are more videos by creators. But I think this makes the point.

Can we be done with Hollywood's Woke BS now? Probably not.

  1. I forgot to update the post with the ratings. As I type this - 18:13 Eastern Time - the ratings are:

Metacritic: Critic reviews - 59 and User Score 0.4
Rotten Tomatoes: Critic score - 52% and Audience Score 6%
IMDB: Rating is 1.3 out of 10 (I believe that is tied for #3 on the worst-rated TV shows of all time)
