They mention the number 2000 - in reference to news stories - in the third paragraph, and they do reference John Lott and a statement about the total self-defense incidents being in the 2 million range. But most people will only glance at the headline and maybe the 1st paragraph.
And why 5? Why not 25? or 2500? Could it be that they hate the very idea of self-defense, and just want people to think it is only 5 times? No. They wouldn't let bias cloud their decisions. They are "professional journalists." Or something.
“The vast majority of successful self-defense cases don’t make the news,” Lott said.
With that trend continuing into 2022, here are five cases in which armed citizens were able to defend themselves and others this year.

But the professionals should be trusted to not spread misleading information. That's what they believe anyway.
