With a healthy price tag. Theodore Roosevelt’s Smith & Wesson revolver fetches nearly $1 million at auction: 'Fantastic condition'
It doesn't say in the article, but it was Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3, which is the Schofield-style top-break revolver, chambered in .38 Long-Colt. That was the military field-issue round of the day for sidearms when it was presented to Roosevelt on May 12, 1898.
It is a beautiful, fully-engraved version, and it appears to be in excellent shape. Click thru for the pictures.
Joel Kolander, interactive production manager [for the Rock Island Auction Company in Illinois], said in an interview that this price is historically high for a collectible firearm. He also described the iconic gun as being in "fantastic condition" even though it's well over a century old.
