Global Heavy Metal Statistics

I love the statistics, whether about crime, or Heavy Metal. The Global Reach of Heavy Metal Bands and Genres

In Finland, home to the highest number of Metal bands per capita (42 per 100K people) and where Metal regularly populates the charts, listeners in Helsinki embrace the new and relatively unknown. In a given month, Metal fans in Helsinki are listening to more than 4K different Metal artists, and they’ve got homegrown heroes on heavy rotation.

Lots more like that. Who they are listening too. The metal scene in Rio de Janeiro and Guadalajara, and more. (Hat tip to Eric Alper.)

  1. I have a couple of heavy metal groups that put out things that I really love. No doubt if I were more exposed to those groups that were doing it, I would find a lot of good music.
I played sax in a rock band, for a few years, and had a blast, and made a few bucks. I got to play music that I loved, but I still missed playing the sax favorite, jazz. I did go to a lot of jam sessions, to be able to do that, and blues.
The thing is, I have played with a LOT of fantastic musicians, of a bunch of different genres, and there are just so many people out there that are much better than most of those who make it to the big time, or as they say, recording contracts. I played with a bass player out of Detroit who could walk onto any stage with any touring group, and not miss a beat. I played with people who toured with Seger, a session fiddle player from Kansas City, who played on all the Nashville sessions.
My twin brother actually is a fantastic drummer and singer, who played with bands since high school, 1978. He has mostly stopped, due to bad knees. But he will take the occasional gig, with a friend, for fun. Another friend from high school played for a band that was one step from the big time, opening for any of the big name acts that came to our city for our summer festivals. He is still playing jazz guitar for hotels, on the weekends. His band was country, that was so sought after, but he was in a hard rock band in high school.
I would rather listen to a very good, tight group that played out of love of music, instead of bubble gum, cookie cutter stars, who uses autotune, and who have writers, producers, and choreographers, etc. to make them stars, that look like the rest of them.
