I have come to value the reviews of the Critical Drinker. At least when it comes to action movies. I tend to like what he likes, and what I hate he pans. For most stuff - to date - I am watching his reviews AFTER I've seen a movie or TV show. I'm sure that will change in the future.
I've been going through his past recommendations and reviews.
If you liked John Wick, you will probably like Nobody. Hutch Mansell is an unassuming guy, with a dead-end job, and a family he is having trouble relating to. He also has a past that is very different. Then his past pulls him back in. Along the way, he takes a beating, but keeps on going. This is classic action stuff - like the original Die Hard, but without Christmas.
My local library has it as DVD. So there's that option if it is not streaming someplace you have access to. It is also available on Hulu, Amazon, and it tends to be playing on HBO. I do have friends far enough out in the country that they still have satellite TV. (It is hard, or impossible, to stream HD video over incredibly slow internet!)
And it is the best thing RZA has done since he produced the music to Kill Bill, Vol. 1 and Vol 2.
(If you don't know who RZA is, you are hopeless. He was (is?) a member of The Wu Tang Clan - the best use of one of their better songs is below.)
There might be some minor spoilers in the review, but I saw it before I saw the movie, and I enjoyed the movie very much.
This is Critical Drinker's review of Nobody - The Perfect Antidote To Modern Action Films
And there's a nice Han Solo reference from the first movie (the first movie was "Episode 4" for reasons that still make no sense) in the movie Nobody. Extra points to anyone who knows what it is. And there is the obligitory easter-egg scene shortly after the credits start to roll.
So this is a scene from the Netflix version of Luke Cage. It is season one, though I can't remember if it is episode 2 or episode 3. It has "Bring Da Rukus" by Wu Tang Clan. It is not in HD - apparently Netflix and YT have a thing about HD clips. Still. (Most - not all - of the Netflix/Marvel stuff is worth a look.)
I actually watched the movie based on CD's recommendation. It has actually gotten to the point that I look for a review from him before watching some 'popular' action or sci-fi flick. He's saved me from watching some serious stinkers that 'everyone' said were good.
ReplyDeleteYes, I watched some of the stinkers and pretty much shut off within 30 minutes as favorite characters or the plotlines all got axed due to muh diversity/muh gurl powers/muh socialism being shoved down my throat.
Still got to see "Ghostbusters Afterlife" on his recommendation.
One of the several reasons that I decided to stop giving Hollywood any of my money - aside from their "We're smarter than you and you should do what we tell you" attitude - is that I spent too much money on awful movies.
DeleteNow I wait for movies to show up at my local library. They are only in DVD not Blu-ray, but that's okay too. Sometimes I will see a movie at a friend's house - other people do pay for Netflix, or Prime video, etc. It has saved me from spending money on some disastrous movies.
