Florida Man Goes For a Swim

The only thing missing is a gator. Caught on Camera: Man jumps off of Edison Bridge to escape LCSO deputies

Lee County is in SW Florida, not quite due west of Fort Lauderdale. Fort Myers is on the Gulf Coast. And while I've never seen a shark in the brackish part of that river, I have seen sharks in brackish waters at the mouths of other rivers on the Gulf of Mexico. Also, alligators could be an issue. (Fort Myers is a bit too far north for the American Crocodile, as those stay mostly in the southern Everglades.) They don't specify which bridge is involved, and I can't remember if there more than one high-bridge in Fort Myers. (High enough for most sailboats to sail under.)

Aside from the wildlife hazards, he could have been knocked unconscious by the fall and drowned. He didn't look like a confident swimmer when he hit the water, but then after a 55 foot fall (with little style) I am not surprised.

According to police, he stole a van, and then the video shows he crashed that van on a bridge. As police arrive he takes a 55 foot jump off the bridge into the Caloosahatchee River.

“That was reckless,” said John Scherer [a Fort Myers resident]. “You can’t teach dumb or stupid. They’re natural-born abilities.”

The guy will face many charges, unfortunately felony stupidity will not be one of them.

This is Peak Florida, at least for today. [UPDATE: the original video I included was made public. This captures the essense of the insanity.]

Here is a video of Man jumps off Edison Bridge bridge to escape deputies.
