Sorry, UK Government, it turns out your “avatar of awful” is actually someone everyone wants to love.
So the UK government produced a video game that was supposed to convince British youth that unbridled immigration was good, British history and traditions are bad, and a bunch of other globalist nonsense. It seems to have blown up in their faces.
Amelia originates from a UK government-funded educational project designed to teach media literacy and awareness of online radicalization. In the game, players encounter Amelia, portrayed as a purple-haired, goth-style character, who espouses views out-of-line with the UK government. The intent behind the design was to present a stylized caricature of online behaviors disliked by the authorities so that users would recognize and resist such content.
Except that instead of hating Amelia, people seem to love her. Then the internet, and the AI users took over, and the result has been glorious, and I'm not even paying that much attention to it.
Once Amelia’s image and personality traits spread across X, the character was adapted into countless AI-generated artworks, memes, and derivative texts.
So the government then tried to put the genie back in the bottle, by disabling the game. Except it is really hard to kill an idea.
