He Suffered from a Failure of the Victim-selection Process

Civilization was nice while it lasted. Off-duty corrections officer turns tables on would-be carjacker, shoot him at Philadelphia gas station

The 35-year-old female victim was pumping gas for her 2018 black BMW just after 10:30 p.m. in North Philadelphia when the 22-year-old Black male suspect approached her at gunpoint and demanded her keys, the Philadelphia Police Department said.

A struggle ensued and despite being knocked to the ground, she was able to draw her own weapon. They both sustained injuries.

Officers on patrol heard the gunshots and rushed to the gas station, where they found the suspect lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. A handgun was recovered from underneath him.

They both were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. He was arrested at the hospital.

Philadelphia, which is being called "Killadelphia" by more people every day, is showing the cracks in civilization. It is approaching what Hobbes wrote about in his book Leviathan. This is not a new idea. Hobbes published Leviathan in 1651. In that book he describes the State of War that ensues when law and order break down.

Western Civilization is built on a foundation of law and order. Without law and order, you can't have nice things. You can't have anything really. Or as Hobbes stated it, when there is no force-of-law to keep people in check, things break down. No one will save or build if things can be stolen or destroyed on a whim. Philadelphia displays that, as does the exodus of retail from places like San Francisco, that have decided shoplifting is perfectly OK.

In any event, self-defense is a human-right. I'm glad she had the training and the weapon to fight off this attack.
