Are You Prepared for Self-defense When on Vacation?

You probably should be. Vacationer in rental home shoots intruder

The shooting took place about 2:15 Sunday morning when a family on vacation was awakened in their rental home by what appeared to be someone in the enclosed lanai breaking into the house.

Florida is a self-defense-friendly state, even to people on vacation. I don't know if Florida ever passed Constitutional Carry, but I do know that if you have out-of-state residence it is likely that they recognize your state's concealed carry license, and if that is not the case, they do offer out-of-state licenses for people from deep blue states. Because they want you to be safe, even if that means protecting yourself.

Sarasota is on the Gulf Coast of Florida South of Tampa Bay and north of Fort Myers. One of my favorite water-front restaurants/bars is Marina Jacks in the heart of Sarasota. It is a bit pricey, but the view is top notch. Or it was... I haven't been there in many years.

Anyway, the suspect was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. No word on his condition, though he is alive. The Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Self-defense is a human-right, and in Florida, it is recognized as a legal right.

  1. They never passed what I consider true constitutional carry (anything you want anytime, anywhere, open or concealed) but they passed permitless carry that just went into effect on July 1.

It says that if you would qualify for the state's permit (over 18, no criminal record, a few things) you don't need to get one. By pure coincidence, my wife and I both renewed our permits two days before the new law went into effect, for convenience in traveling.

    1. They have Constitutional Carry in Ohio, but I renewed my license. You usually get a better deal at companies like CCW Safe, The cost of the class is not high (relative to what I spend on ammo), and as you note it makes traveling easier.
