And when the sheep are afraid, they will turn over their rights to the government. The chilling costs of Project Fear
This story is out of the United Kingdom, but they are not the only bureaucracy that went for the "scare the crap out of the sheep" policy. Because like all bureaucracies they wanted more power.
The clarion call was to "Follow the science!" Except that there was damn little science to be had for all of this. And what there was, didn't make it into the policies and pronouncements.
The Government’s actions might have been defensible if they were merely concerned with communicating truths about which the public needed to be aware. But the messages issued by ministers were not always true – for example, the insistence that the virus does not discriminate, as if younger cohorts had significant cause to fear dying from it. And the intention was evidently not just to educate people, but to terrify them into compliance with the rules.
Tell the youngsters that they had nothing to worry about? How are you going to get them to submit, to abdicate a bunch of their rights, if you tell them that?
Tragically, all of this meant that the UK missed the opportunity to take an approach more akin to that of Sweden, where the aim instead was to calm the population and give them the tools to judge Covid risks for themselves.
But there is the problem. The UK (and the US) bureaucracy thinks you are too stupid to manage risk in your own life. You should just shut up and do what you're told to do. Informed consent? That is a 20th Century concept that is part of democracy. This is the 21st Century where you will own nothing, have no rights, and you will be as happy as you are told to be.
