4 December 1951 to 5 March 2023. Lynyrd Skynyrd founding member Gary Rossington dead at 71
I predict we will hear a lot of "Free Bird" today. But while Rossington plays on that song, he doesn't play lead on that song. Allen Collins played lead on "Free Bird." Gary Rossington played slide and rhythm guitar on that song.
Gary Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s last surviving original member who also helped to found the group, died Sunday at the age of 71. No cause of death was given.
He had a heart attack in 2015, and bypass surgery in 2003, and few other surgeries. He left the band in 2021 due to health issues.
Do the kids today even know who Lynyrd Skynyrd is? They reconstituted in the late 1980s, after the plane crash, and the farewell tour was in 2018 or 2019.
This is "Tuesday's Gone" by Lynyrd Skynyrd from their 1973 debut album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). Lead guitar parts played by Gary Rossington.
And if you want a smile on a sad day, the first couple of minutes of this video is people trying to figure out how to pronounce Lynyrd Skynyrd, while looking at the album cover for (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd).
Such a great slide player, and an all around great guitarists. I always thought that after Ed King left, and was replaced by Steve Gaines, that Skynyrd had the best lineup of guitarists in rock history. Collins, Gaines, and Rossington were absolute magic. We only got 1 album from that iteration of Synyrd. Lord how much great music we never got to hear
