Electric Batteries, Lithium and Opposition to Mining in the US

Granite Grok has a story that makes you wonder if anyone believes in the electric car future we're being sold. Largest Rock Lithium Deposit in US Goes to Court

Late last year, we reported news of the largest hard rock lithium deposit ever discovered. Given that there’s not enough of the stuff to achieve the ineffable utopia of net zero, you’d think the Dems would be pushing hard from all corners to get it out of the ground.

Nope.

Given that the price of lithium has at least doubled (it is not a commodity that I follow) in the past year, and is probably headed higher, I would want to mine it too.

First, it’s in America, and we’re not allowed to let anyone see what mining any sort of lithium does to the environment. [SNIP]

Second, the lithium deposit is on land owned by Mary and Gary Freeman, but it is in Maine, where the mining laws are so strict there are no active mines. They want the right to dig it up. State laws make it impossible, so they asked the courts to clarify the meaning of the word metals in the context of what they claim is not a metal but a rock.

Click thru for the description of lithium mining that I cut out. It is long, but truthful.

So is anyone actually serious about this electric car future? If so, we need lithium and we need cobalt. Both are things that Americans have been banned from mining in the past few years.

  1. Better check the Moon for lithium and cobalt. Mass drivers to send, land it at White Sands Missile Range right up the road here. Optimum size for entry appears to be about 1 meter across.
