The Criminal Justice System in Chicago Is Broken

Probably not just in Chicago, but this story is from the Windy City. Chicago man was out on bond in attempted murder case when he allegedly killed 2 men during ‘video shoot party’

Recidivism is no longer a surprise, but the snail's pace of Justice in Chicago is.

A man free on bond in an attempted murder case shot and killed two men during a "video shoot party" last month in North Lawndale, prosecutors said Wednesday.

As for repeat offenders, CWBChicago tracks this guy, Absalom Coakley, as the 44th person to be arrested for a serious crime, while on bail for a felony. #44: Chicago man shot and killed 2 people at a party while on bond for attempted murder, prosecutors say

He is the 44th person accused of killing or shooting—or attempting to kill or shoot—someone in Chicago while awaiting trial for a felony this year. The alleged crimes involved at least 82 victims, 21 of whom died.

After that much bloodshed, it is hard to be shocked. But back to the first link at the top, and a new bit of information about the Criminal Justice System, so-called, in Chicago.

At the time of his arrest, Coakley was free on a $15,000 deposit bond in an attempted murder case filed in 2016, [Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher] Nugarus said.

He was also on probation in a felony drug case from 2014 that was still considered "open and pending" because he repeatedly violated the conditions, Nugarus said.

So being in violation of probation has no impact on his freedom. Then why bother with probation, aside from the fact that it is a jobs program for bureaucrats in Cook County, Illinois?

And how is it that a crime from 2016 has not been dealt with. I know the insanity around COVID-19 caused problems, but three years seems like a long time, even before COVID. Maybe they could get rid of some probation officers and hire another attorney or two, or some office support to make the prosecutions run faster. Or something.

One of the two men Coakley is accused of shooting was shot in the back of the head. Despite that, his attorney brought up the issue of self-defense. ("You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.")

The judge has decided, for the time being anyway, that this guy is a danger to the community, and he has been denied bail. Bets on if that will change? Bets on how long it will be before Cook County gets around to prosecuting a case from 2016, or decides to do something about parole violations dating back to 2014?

This whole thing is an issue because of the Progressive stance that is unfair to keep violent offenders in jail.

Civilization was nice while it lasted.

  2. Absalom? Really, didn't they know what Absalom did, and ultimately got?
Or maybe they did know. That is the scary part.
