New Orleans: Murder Capital of America

When you look at the murder rate per 100,000 people, NOLA is not looking too good. New Orleans replaces St. Louis as murder capital of the US; Democrat rule ravages the Big Easy

The murder rate in New Orleans, Louisiana for the first six months of 2022 was 41 per 100,000 residents.

“The homicide rate was 11.5 in Chicago, 4.8 in Los Angeles and 2.4 per 100,000 in New York City for the same period,” according to the WSJ. “This year to date, the New Orleans homicide rate is up 141% compared with the same period in 2019, according to the Metropolitan Crime Commission Inc., a nonprofit that works to reduce crime in the city. Shootings are up 100%, carjackings 210% and armed robberies up 25%. The homicide rate is on pace to surpass last year’s rate, which was the worst since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.”

The homicide rate in New Orleans is an order of magnitude higher than Los Angeles or New York City, and four times higher than the rate in Chicago. That is sad.

The mayor of NOLA, LaToya Cantrell, took time out of her schedule of important duties, like "the unveiling of a sculpture of a gigantic afro hair pick in historic Lafayette Square just in time for the recognition of Juneteenth" to assure everyone that she is working on the problem.

While NOLA may be leading the way, it is not the only city with a crime problem.

The spike in violent crime has become an epidemic in areas controlled by “woke” Democrats who have demonized their own police forces, coddled criminals and implemented policies that have put the safety of law-abiding citizens in constant danger from vicious thugs who have all but officially been given the keys to their cities with few being more dangerous than New Orleans.

The current police Superintendent, Shaun Ferguson, says that the criminals "do not believe they will face any consequences." I guess that means they have a DA who has become a non-prosecuting attorney.

There is more if you click thru. More statistics on crime, estimates of how short the New Orleans PD really is, and more on the politics.

There is also link to a Wall Street Journal article, which for a change is not behind a paywall. At least it was not behind a paywall when I read it. That article has more on the situation, and the lack of morale in the Police Department.

There is also some info on businesses leaving the city for the suburbs, where their employees might be safe.

It is a depressing look at the colapse of a once-great city into anarchy.
