Proof That Big City Schools Don't Care About Kids

They care about how things look. Vast majority at Baltimore high school read at elementary level, some kindergarten: Assessment.

This is based on test scores at one high school. Do you think the rest of the district is much different?

At Patterson High School in Baltimore, 77% of students tested at an elementary-school reading level at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

A teacher at the high school, which has a 61% graduation rate and a nearly $12 million budget, shared the iReady test results with FOX 45 Baltimore.

A school where more then 75% of the students can't read at the high school level sees more than half the students graduate and get a diploma. What do you think a high school diploma is worth in Baltimore?

BCPS's "one fail" policy aims to ensure no student is held back more than once before ninth grade, meaning students are regularly pushed to the next grade level even if their learning levels do not catch up at the same pace.

It would be bad for their self-esteem if you forced them to learn. It would be bad for their socialization if you forced them to learn. And the schools don't care what happens to them after they graduate.

But never fear, in order to counter the bad press, the school is going to spend a boat load of money on a "new program." But they won't insist that students learn to read in order to graduate. Expecting people to read and do math is RACIST. (They didn't say that in the article, but I'm sure it is.)

And just for grins, I looked up per-student spending: How much do Baltimore taxpayers spend per student?

Baltimore public schools spend more than $17,000 in taxpayer funds per student.

Which is actually less than I expected. By comparison St. Francis Academy in Baltimore, a coeducational high school run by the Baltimore Archdioceses, has a tuition of just less than $12,000, and has 99% of its graduates go on to college.

As far as the original article linked at the top goes, no statement from the union about any of this.

  2. The $17,000 per student is misleading. More funds are expended for special needs students then the average student and exceptional students really get the shaft as districts cut programs for high achievers.
