Concealed Carry in the Windy City

And we all need to spend more time at the range. Robber and clerk exchanged gunfire during River North store hold-up, police say - CWB Chicago

A store employee exchanged gunfire with another man during an armed robbery on Sunday afternoon in River North, police said. No injuries were reported, but a witness said the store’s glass, which faces busy Ontario Street, was shot out.

Police suspect the same robber held up two more stores in the Loop less than an hour later.

There are many more details at the link. But this one is interesting.

Police did not identify the store, but officers entered Mystical Kicks and Mystical Smokes, which sells gym shoes, CBD products, and vaping supplies at 33 West Ontario. Investigators were verifying the employee’s concealed carry credentials.

Because they HATE self-defense in the Windy City.

  1. I don't know if you remember the old Second City Cop blog, now defunct unfortunately, but it was run by street cops and they LOVED lawful concealed carry.

Unfortunately, most politicians, and that includes the higher-ups in the police department, sheriffs office, and states attorneys office, hate lawful concealed carry citizens.

    1. Yeah I know of SCC. He still writes occasionally over at Chicago Contrarian (see the sidebar), though not lately.

Unfortunately the orders are going to come down "Go see if that kid has a CCW permit, and throw the book at him if he doesn't." Those are going to come from the politicians. Either CPD Brass or Crimesha's band of non-prosecuting attorneys.

  2. My sibling, who lives about a mile north of there, insists that you avoid the violence by avoiding the areas where the violence happens.

I think that's BS as you pass thru those areas while coming and going, and there isn't an electric fence keeping the violence in one area or another.

FWIW, back in the mid-80s I worked on a construction project (gentrification) close to Sheffield and Belmont, near the Old Vic. That was an area with gang fighting in the streets at night back then. And you WOULD be caught dead on North Av. Last time I was there, I was stunned to see college kids walking on North late at night... but that was the goal of gentrification- turn a scary sh!thole into productive property again. Given that that was about 5 -7 years ago, I don't know how badly it's fallen back down, but I bet it's a lot.

    1. That "avoid violence by avoiding the areas impacted" might have worked even 10 years ago. But River North, Streeterville, Lincoln Park have all been overrun. The Magnificent Mile has seen some of the worst looting, vandalism and just plain violence of anywhere in the city in the past 2 years.

When gangs of carjackers decide to head out, they go to where people have nice cars.

I don't think there is a part of the city that hasn't been hit. Some areas are still worse than others, but you are not protected by your zip code.
