From Wombat-socho at The Other McCain, we get The Stars Above
Welcome back to the continued trashing of what may be the worst list of recommended SF not published on Tor.com.
The post in question Science Fiction and the Strategist 3.0 from Real Clear Defense, has some good suggestions, and a few head-scratchers.
An example of the later would be War of Honor by David Weber. It is the 10th book in a series, and while I'm not sure that it is strictly necessary to read them in order, by the time the 10th book rolls around there is a lot of history of the characters you are not privy too. And besides, the first few are better stories, and by the time War of Honor the story keeps getting bogged down in politics, which makes the pacing very slow. Not as slow as the Horatio Hornblower series, but slow.
I have finally gotten around to reading the last few books in that series, at least volumes 12, 13 and 14 describe the Solarian League, on the surface a democracy with the seat of government being "Old Earth." But only on the surface. The parialment has lost control of the bureaucracy, which also controls the media, and so the bureaucracy is free to wage war, even committing war crimes, out of the sight of the average citizen. It isn't exactly a vison of what we are living through, or what is happening in Australia, but it isn't far off, either.
Anyway, click thru for the suggestions that Wombat-socho has.
