Cybersecurity Awareness Month

That would be October. Being aware there is a thing known as Cybersecurity doesn't mean you actually have any. XKCD

This is the 18th year of "celebrating" this month. Given everything cybersecurity related that has happened in the past 18 years - or even in the past 3 years - I would say that the awareness isn't all that great. Hence the cartoon above from XKCD on multi-factor authentication.

And you'll be happy to note that once again your tax dollars are hard at work. Or something. CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH 2021 TOOLKIT. From the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency... The bureaucracy named by the Department of Redundancy Department of the US .gov, the agency with the logo that I hate. (I hate the name and the logo of CISA.)

But the month comes with a cool slogan this year.

Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.

Well. Problem solved! The only thing missing is a Smoky Bear or Woodsy Owl style mascot. (Maybe they could license Clippy from Microsoft for the mascot.)

How many of you use a password manager? How many use a VPN when you are at your local coffee shop? Any type of secure communications? Public Key encryption? When was the last time you updated the firmware on your router? Do you even know how to long into your router?

  1. Don't yield! Back S.H.I.E.L.D.!

We can blame *that* one on 1960s comic book writing (early Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. stories in Strange Tales), but I bet that derpy tweet paid someone on hell of a lot more...
