When I first saw the reports of this incident, I was certain that the authorities would prosecute this guy for defending himself. It is what they (usually) do in Canada. Homeowner who shot, killed man in rural Alberta break-in won’t be charged: RCMP
In a Friday news release, RCMP said witnesses reported that the homeowner had arrived at his residence to find the deceased sleeping inside.
“A confrontation then occurred in which the deceased struck the homeowner numerous times with a baseball bat,” RCMP said. “During the attack, the homeowner was able to retrieve a firearm and shot the deceased one time.”
The homeowner was able to call police before being attacked with the bat. It took RCMP 10 minutes to arrive at the scene. As this case points out, a lot of bad things can happen in 10 minutes.
The Crown prosecutor has decided not to charge the homeowner with a crime. That is both a decision made at warp speed, and a very unexpected decision.
“In this particular case, there was a lot of evidence and it was all very consistent,” RCMP Cpl. Susan Richter said. “The Crown prosecutor’s office was pretty comfortable with the decision that charges were not appropriate.”
Canadian authorities hate self-defense even more than the average prosecutor in the US.
Self-defense is a human-right.
