The 2020-2021 Police Exodus Continues

The shortage of police will be getting worse in years to come. Atlanta police ditching department and slamming leadership in letters

While the article linked above is mostly about Atlanta, where retirements are an issue, there is some national data, even if it is not of the highest quality.

Like Atlanta, police morale across the country has dropped while retirements and resignations have hit all-time highs. A June survey of nearly 200 departments by the Police Executive Research Forum, a nonprofit Washington-based think tank, showed a 45% increase in the retirement rates and an 18% increase in resignations across the board in 2020-2021 compared to the previous year.

There is very little information provided about that survey. The exact number of departments is apparently a detail too far. The number of officers in those departments is apparently not important. Large or small departments? Urban or rural? But then statisics is math, and math is hard, especially for journalists.

Oh, and Atlanta's mayor has blamed the 50 percent increase in murders on Republicans. And guns. Once again, there is no mention of murderers.

So what happens when you call 911 and there are no cops? (Hat tip to Doug Ross)
