Summer in the Cities

Well it is almost summer.

First up are the Chicago statistics from HeyJackass! Mostly Peaceful Weekend

After a cool, subdued Memorial Day weekend, true summer weather arrives and the stupidity will likely go on a run to make up for lost time (and did so).

Final Peaceful Tally: 5 killed, 58 wounded
2020 weekend tally: 5 killed, 38 wounded

2014 saw 3 killed, and 33 wounded.

St. Louis has been in my news feeds recently. Violent weekend in St. Louis City and County leaves 3 dead, 11 injured.

At least three people are dead following more than a dozen shootings in St. Louis City and County since Saturday afternoon. FOX 2 News has counted at least 14 incidents since 2 p.m. Saturday. Of the 14 victims, 7 are teenagers, 1 is a juvenile, and 6 are adults.

New Orleans: 11 people shot over 13-hour span in New Orleans: What we know from police. One incident accounted for 8 of those shot.

But the yearly stats in the New Orleans article is what initially captured my attention.

In New Orleans, murders are up 24% and non-fatal shootings are up 80% compared to this point last year. Meanwhile, crime reports overall are down 5%, according to crime data collected on a New Orleans City Council dashboard.

Two other categories with major increases are carjackings, up 108%, and armed robberies, up 26%.

And then there is New York. The answer to shootings isn’t to ‘defund’ the NYPD. While I can't find weekend numbers, there are again statistics.

Murder in the city is up 9 percent. Shooting incidents were up 86 percent in May. The number of shooting victims is up almost 72 percent. And crime on public transit rose 93 percent from May 2020.

Though since transit was mostly closed down last year, that last number is meaningless.

I'm sure you could go on at length with more cities...

  1. And yet, in my little town where more people most likely own guns than not, there is ZERO gun crimes. According to the hoplophobes, blood should be "running in the streets."
