Is It Impossible for Governments to Save Money?

This is a story about a dam in need of repair or replacement. That need has been under discussion for a decade, and they have no funds set aside. Roxbury Wants Another Delay of Dam Project that 'Defies Logic'

Township officials are looking for a way to avoid spending $270,000 to repair the historic Ledgewood Pond Dam, a project dictated by the state which is offering no funding.

I get that this has been a bad year. But then why didn't you spend the money in 2015 or 2018?

And they may have been talking about it for 10 years, but the dam was built in the 19th Century. Did they think it was going to last forever?

The state classified the dam as having “significant hazard potential,” a designation meaning a breach likely would cause property damage downstream but no loss of life.

Why are we not capable of taking care of infrasturcture?

  1. because
    1. nobody cares until it breaks, and then they just look for someone to blame.

    2. invite the 3rd world, becomes the 3rd world.

    3. building something new gives politicians something to brag about (back when you actually elected them rather than them being appointed as now), but maintaining stuff is boring and hard and nobody gets any credit for that.

    4. most government workers are just sitting there collecting paychecks and getting massive pensions, not actually doing work. (look at how often despite having huge departments to do whatever, the real work they contract out)

    5. it's a giant bust out, everyone is busy getting theirs (payoffs, rollbacks, etc) and screw everyone else.
