Are we surpised that a large portion of the "feminist agenda" is really about advertising dollars? She Wrote Fake News for Cosmo, but Regrets Misleading Women
Back in the 1960s there were real issues for feminism to confront. Women could be fired for getting pregnant. Women could not apply for credit in their own names. There were "Help Wanted: Male" and "Help Wanted: Female" ads. Women were denied entry to Medical Schools and Law Schools. And many colleges. You didn't have to invent the idea of a "microaggression" because there were the real issues to deal with.
But then the advertisers got involved.
“Why all this hijacking of the women’s movement?” Browder asks. “Money.”
“Why was Cosmo so successful? Because it attracted advertisers. Why did it attract advertisers? Because it worked. When a young woman, an insecure young woman, reads these magazines and thinks that she has to have perfume, cosmetics, hair products, beautiful clothes, singles travel … abortions, contraception, when she thinks she has to have all of these things, she’s going to spend a lot of money.”
It goes about about how writers for Cosmo were instructed to lie and to fabricate so that the insanity of NYC could be exported to the country as a whole.
It isn't long and it is worth a look. Hat tip to Captain Capitalism, who notes...
It's a dated article, but an important one to show you what diet young women (even in "The Before Time" pre-internet) were fed about the sexes.
