Steps to Take to Restore Some of Your Privacy

How to get some of your information removed from the internet. Remove Google Search results you don’t want people to find

Kim Komando has a call in show about consumer tech, and security.

This is an article about some steps you can take to restore some privacy. It isn't an exhaustive list of course, but you can do some things before you have to pay for a reputation service.

Here is the first item on the list.

1. Get Google to hide your house from view

Google Maps is convenient and Street View is fun to poke around in, but you might not want photos of your house and address number out there. You can request a privacy blur over pictures of your home or vehicle.

I know that privacy is a very 20th Century Concept, maybe even 19th Century, but there are times it is important. And although these steps are basic, you need to start somewhere.

  1. While you can probably do that for Google; Chances are your County or state assessors office has pictures too.

Which are by law public info most of the time. I guess I can only specify for MN. But just be aware similar data will still be out there.

    1. While I wouldn't delete or fuzz photos of my house, I might if the photo included my vehicle sitting in my driveway. At least ask them to fuzz the license plate. Though they may be doing that on their own now.

Maps isn't as annoying as it was when it first debuted. They would publish every WiFi system that was broadcasting a SSID. I don't think they do that anymore, but for a time the would suppress any SSID that contained the strning "NOMAP" or NO_MAP" (I forget).
