Tam (from View From The Porch) has an article at Shooting Illustrated (An Official Journal Of The NRA) this month. Wheelgun U-Turn
Some guns, or factors of shooting, are the concern only of those who shoot very little and those who shoot a great deal.
I have both wheelguns and semiautomatic pistols. Why? Because I know myself. If I wake up at 3 AM because there was a noise, I am not in any condition to deal with a semiautomatic. Mostly you don't have to worry about feed jams, and stove-piping with factory ammo. But then there is that word. "Mostly." During the day, I can deal with issues, and like more capacity. Can you guess what gun I keep by the bedside? (Hint: Look at the title of this blog!)
While attending the 2023 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Indianapolis, IN, I noticed that my longtime friend and colleague Caleb Giddings, competitive shooter, firearms instructor and current marketing guru for Taurus USA, was giving a lecture on the place of revolvers in the modern world of concealed carry and personal defense. Being something of a wheelgun aficionado myself, I figured I’d sit in on his presentation and see what his pitch was going to be to a cross section of engaged NRA members.
He touched on various pros and cons, the utility of the double-action trigger pull, ammunition versatility and that sort of thing, of course, but what I found interesting was what he referred to as the “U-Shaped Utility Curve of Revolvers.”
So my revolver can sit there (nearly) forever. Loaded, and at rest, with no tension on springs. And with a speed loader to keep it company. If it ever turns out that the noise in the middle of the night is more than a stray cat, or racoon, then the adrenaline will kick in, and I have enough ammo in my hand to reach either a pistol with a whole lot more ammo on hand, or a rifle and few extra magazines.
Anyway, click thru and read the whole thing. Tam writes a 100 times better than I do, and it sounds like the seminar was fairly interesting.
