Professors and others most impacted. Students now permitted to carry guns on West Virginia college campuses
Professors can eliminate guns from their offices by putting a up window sticker. "No crime allowed on this campus" signs soon to put college police forces out of business everywhere.
Regardless of whether students or faculty think it's a good or bad idea, the West Virginia legislature said yes to a new law allowing people with a valid concealed carry license to carry handguns on college campuses throughout West Virginia.
I wish that someone could point to an instance where a defenseless victim zone has stopped a crime. If you want to eliminate guns from an area, you need to institute the controls you find in airports. Putting up signs doesn't stop the bad guys. If it did, putting up speed limit signs would eliminate all speeding. Putting up "no crime allowed" signs would eliminate shoplifting. I don't think anyone thinks that would work.
It's not a wide-open law that applies to just anywhere. Places you cannot carry include events with 1,000 or more people, like athletic events.
It isn't a perfect solution, but it isn't bad. I think this will impact more people who work at universities than the students, though at least 5 students have taken advantage of some of the options.
