Building a Cruise Ship

I haven't had a post about massive technology projects in a while. For one, I kind of overdid that, and lately the implosion of Disney, and the Woke Hollywood in general has just been too much fun. But today I will have one entry in that old series about massive builds. In this case a cruise ship.

Adam Savage, formerly of MythBusters, has been documenting the build of a Princess line cruise ship, Sun Princess, in Italy. The video we have today is near the end of the line for the build. And it is the 9th of the Tested series on the build. A link to the whole playlist can be found below the embedded video.

The modular way that the ship was designed, to be built in sections, bow to stern, which are welded together. There are 6 different types of cabin bathrooms, built in modules offsite, and the cabins themselves are built as prefabricated modules in a warehouse in the shipyard and installed in the ship. Because of this modular nature, the ship was scheduled to only be under construction in the dry dock for 10 months, with dockside construction continuing for a few months after it has been floated.

There is a lot of noise being made that this is a "dual fuel" ship that will rely mostly on LNG. While I can't find any definitive info, this leads me to believe that the ship, like a lot of cruise ships recently built, will be powered by gas turbine engines producing electricity. This is also reinforced by the type of primary propulsion (which is covered in the first video in the playlist). But again, I could find no information on that. Lots of info on the dining and accommodations, but not much on the engineering.

This is Adam Savage's Tested video Adam Savage Tours a Ship Engine Room, in which he tours a part of the engine room, and a lot more. The discussion includes a few things like, "How do you provide breakfast for 4300 people?" (More than that really - 4300 "guests" plus crew.)

Here is a link to the entire playlist.
