I'm A) not surprised, and B) relieved. Green Lantern HBO Max Series Canceled Claims DC Insider
It's claimed the Green Lantern HBO Max series has been canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav, which follows the news of the Batgirl cancellation.
I would say, not too surprising.
First up, according to other stuff I read, they were not going to focus on Hal Jordan, but on Alan Scott as the Green Lantern from earth, one of the first DC superheroes to come out as gay. And they weren't really going to focus on him, but on the Green Lantern Corps. If I had to guess that is so that they could really focus on (what Critical Drinker would call) Strong Female Character, and diversity, and hit us over the head with The Message™. Probably more than one strong female character.
Now I have nothing against strong, well written, female characters. DC even managed to pull it off with the 2017 Wonder Woman. There are multiple strong female characters in that movie. But they have also (along with Marvel) managed to screw that up multiple times.
Anyway, back to Green Lantern.
The news wouldn't be that surprising as it seems Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav are cutting costs, and it's probably safe to say the Green Lantern HBO Max series has a pretty big budget due to all the special effects.
Imagine that! A business making decisions based on the bottom line. What's next? Stories that don't rely on aliens, explosions, special effects or CGI? They might actually have to tell a story? Well, probably neither DC nor Marvel will have to give up on the CGI just yet.
