What Do You Get for $2.1 Billion? NYC Edition

Not much. The miserable life inside NYC's broken shelter system

This was linked by another Post article on the homeless in NYC. The administration wants the homeless to go to shelters. But the shelters are not safe, they are not clean. And after years of "fixing things," the city has not managed to change much.

The barracks-style facilities for single adults — some of which are literally built in old armories — have repeatedly come under intense scrutiny over safety concerns. But they still exist because New York is required by a decades-old court settlement to provide every homeless New Yorker with a bed, and the barracks facilities are usually the cheapest way to do that.

Roaches. Mice. Assaults. Other crime. Who would want to turn to that? This is the "solution to homelessness" that the Liberals are so proud of.

We’ve been having this conversation about shelter security for years,” said Levin, who left the Council in 2021 after 12 years because of the city’s term limits law. “It’s not the way we should be approaching shelter.”

Anyway, the story is from early March, but it is still worth a look, if you want to see how government works after literally years of saying they are going to fix things. Or doesn't work - it's a matter of perspective.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help. Still the most frightening sentence in the English language.
