I enjoyed just about every movie of his I ever saw. Sidney Poitier, 1st Black man to win best actor Oscar, dead at 94
Poitier, who transformed how Black people were portrayed on screen, won in 1964 for Lilies of the Field
If you haven't seen Lilies of the Field, you should; it is a wonderful movie. This is a short video of him winning and accepting the Oscar for Best Actor.
You should also see To Sir, with Love and In the Heat of the Night.
I suppose that I should say you should also see Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, but that movie is worth seeing primarily for Spencer Tracy's speech at the end of the film. That and because it was his last movie.
ReplyDeleteEvery other character in the film was a cardboard cutout, but then it was one of the first movies to be Woke, as we call it today. And it mostly worked, though not as well as In the Heat of the Night.
And I had to change the title to the post. While Sidney Poitier did receive an honorary knighthood in 1974, he was apparently not entitled to go by Sir Sidney Poitier.
