You Are NOT Protected By Your Zip Code

And you're doing it wrong. Families on edge after 2 home invasion incidents in town of Paris.

Two home invasions - one attempted, one successful - in a small town near Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The first homeowner heard footsteps in her house, but couldn't believe it. She did send her pit bull, Bella, to investigate.

She found the dog attacking a man she'd never seen before in her kitchen.

"I immediately yelled for him to leave and ran to get the gun," Kaley said. "By the time I had come back down the hallway, he'd proceeded to walk towards me."

Okay, it is pretty simple. BEFORE you go to investigate strange noises - especially if you think they were probably footsteps - get the gun. If you don't need it, you can just put it away. "It is better to have it, and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

"No matter with the gun drawn on him, he kept walking towards me," Kaley said.

Kaley said only when she leveled the gun to the intruder's head, he finally left, driving off in an old maroon SUV.

"Now I wish I had shot him, to be honest," Kaley said.

There was a 2nd call to 911, about an attempted home invasion not far from the first. In that case 2 pit bulls scared off an intruder, who also walked in through an unlocked door. (Actually this sounds like a reall home invasion, not an attempted...)

Locked doors, at least in the case of most residential doors, are not really much of a deterrent, but they do make noise when the fail. And the bad guys can usually break a window anyway, if they really want access.

Kaley and her husband Ken said they purchased another gun.

The second victim said they are putting a camera outside their home.

Both families said they will lock their doors from now on.

You are not protected by your zip code. Crime is Not something that happens to other kinds of people in other kinds of places. You may be less likely to be a victim in some areas and more likely in others, but the chance is never zero. And in those low crime areas, you might want to check on the average police response to a 911 call. In a small town it might be quick, out in the country, it could be a little while. You should plan accordingly.

As a side note: When was the last time you saw a news article that painted pit bulls in a positive light?
