Because that wouldn't too much like a police state. Police officers are rarely charged after a shooting. This new Utah law could make it even harder.
The new law allows those accused of a crime to ask for an extra court hearing if they believe they acted in self-defense. At that hearing, prosecutors have to prove with “clear and convincing” evidence that the accused weren’t defending themselves.
It doesn't apply to cops specifically, but it also doesn't exclude them.
So why was the law passed? Because prosecutors hate self-defense, and not just when cops defend themselves. And so they would prosecute everyone if they thought they could win based on prejudice, or whatever. Now they actually have to show that they have a clear case before "innocent until proved guilty" can be overridden.
