Textbook Self-defense in Texas

She had the right to defend herself. EXPLAINER: Use of deadly force in Texas

Police say 26-year-old Selena Carrion was punched in the face before her ex left her apartment and came back. The boyfriend, 26-year-old Leroy Hammond-Williams, is said to have kicked in the door and grabbed her as she ran upstairs.

That is when, police say, Carrion shot and killed him.

And since this happened in Texas, there is The Castle Doctrine. See the article for the text of the law, but it basically says you have the right ot defend yourself in your own home.

“You have a right to be secure in your surroundings,” Snodgrass [an experienced attorney] said. “And you have a right to defend your property in your surroundings.”

It is unlikely she will be charged, given how clear the circumstances are.

Self-defense is a human-right, and in Texas it is your legal right.

  1. It's good that the law that is written aligns with the obvious.
