You Say You Don't Want Police Protection?

Well, you just might get your wish. Dozens of fed-up NYPD cops fleeing for Long Island departments

50 cops left for Long Island, just since Friday, December 11th.

Dozens of fed-up NYPD officers have fled the department to go work for Long Island’s Nassau County Police Department, The Post has learned — with insiders citing an increasingly anti-cop climate in the city and underwhelming pay.

They are cops with less than 5 years in the NYPD mostly, and while they will take a short term cut in pay, they will make more in the long run. And...

“They are going to a department where they will be better appreciated by their community, local politicians and district attorneys who still value the job they do protecting innocent people and property over criminals,” said one source.

This is on top of a rash of retirements so severe that the NYPD had to put on the brakes. From July: NYPD limits retirement applications amid 400 percent surge this week.

The NYPD said Wednesday that 179 cops filed for retirement between June 29 and Monday, an astounding 411 percent increase over the 35 who filed during the same period in 2019.

And when there is blood in the water, the sharks will circle. Also from July: DHS Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli says he’d ‘love’ to hire NYPD cops.

The Department of Homeland Security has a message for NYPD cops disgruntled over recent anti-police unrest and a lack of backing from lawmakers: We’re hiring.

Ken Cuccinelli, the agency’s acting deputy secretary, tweeted Wednesday afternoon that DHS would welcome fed-up Finest with open arms.

The cops with less than 5 years on NYPD got trained, got experience, and now they are going elsewhere. Someone pointed out that is a bad return on investment. Want to bet that the city has trouble hiring new cops? That is assuming that the city wants cops, of course. As the staffing levels fall (50 people quit since FRIDAY) response time to 911 calls will go up. Criminals will relaize there is little to fear, and crime will go up. More than it already has. It wasn't all that long ago that NYC had a real crime problem. It probably will again.
