The Geniuses In Charge of Illinois Finances

Because up until now it has been Business-As-Usual in the Land of Lincoln. Which means they have been spending money like there is no tomorrow. Pritzker warns ‘there will be cuts, and they will be painful’ after graduated-rate income tax proposal fails at the ballot box

Pritzker was clear from the start that he believed the only choices if the measure failed would be a 15% across-the-board cut to discretionary spending, a 1 percentage point increase in the state’s flat-rate income tax rate of 4.95%, or some combination.

Pritzker, who is not-so-affectionately called Fatso by a lot of people, didn't want to cut government. He wants bigger government. Even if the state can't afford it.

So why didn't he cut 15 percent out of the budget at the beginning of the year? Or after he ordered the COVID-19 lockdowns? It couldn't be because he owes the government-sector unions, could it?

I mean, what is "discretionary spending" and why is there any of it? What is not discretionary? Because while you might think that funding pensions is a "required expenditure" the legislature in Illinois hasn't thought that way in a very long time. Which is one of the reasons that they are so completely screwed.

Hat tip to Second City Cop, who notes as to the "cuts to government..."

And to that we say, "About f*cking time"

And there is more...

How about cutting fucking spending? We haven't seen one proposal to do that until now. In fact, we can name (literally) thousands of city, county and state employees who have been sitting home, receiving paychecks, doing absolutely nothing.

Oh, and in another case of the pre-election polls being completely wrong... Progressive income tax amendment heading for defeat

In March, a poll showed 65% of Illinois voters supported the graduated income tax amendment, according to the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. That flipped on Election Day to 55% against the tax.

Pritzker spent 58 million dollars of his own money to get that amendment passed, so he could tax the hell out of Illinois citizens. Now he is throwing a temper-tantrum because the voters didn't Shut Up and Do What [He] tells you to do! (SCC gets the hat tip on that as well.)

  1. The fun part of this is that apparently The Pritz spent over 50 million on the advertising campaign (which he will probably find a way to deduct come tax time) and people still said no. As annoying as the ads were I’m laughing at them now.
