Within Temptation is a Dutch (don't worry - they sing in English) Symphonic Metal band. It was started in 1996 by lead singer Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. I love the fact that he worked in Human Resources before his music took off. (He got to quit his day job.) Though he only does studio playing, he is the band's main composer.
As for the rest of the band, Ruud Jolie plays lead guitar, Stefan Helleblad plays rhythm guitar, Mike Coolen is the drummer, Martijn Spierenburg is the keyboardist, and Jeroen van Veen plays bass guitar.

They are an amazing band and are right up there with Nightwish and Epica, but don't get the same level of recognition. They have always been a bit more likely to step out of the genre, they had a number with a rapper a few years back that is far better than you might think. I suppose you could say Sharon isn't quite the equal of Floor or Tarja or Simone but she is awfully close. They have maintained a level of excellence for almost thirty years and while Epica has also maintained a similar level Nightwish has not. There are the dark years of 2005 to 2012 and the mostly insipid current album.
